Meeting Clients on Facebook

If you want a million comments on a Facebook post, simply say that you’re looking for a photographer! You know what I’m talking about. In 2024 there are more “professional” photographers than there are DJs. But are they any good? Maybe they’ve taken a few amazing pictures, but how do you know they would do a good job for your business?

As a freelancer in 2022, I would respond to 10-20 of these Facebook messages per day. Typically I would do some research and type out a thoughtful response, but was getting used to the reality of getting turned down 95% of the time. On a somewhat normal day, I came across a post in a Facebook group asking for an “About Video” for their business. Of course I knew that I was the guy for the job, but apparently so did 100 other people.

When I see 100 comments on a post, I realize that the chances for anyone to even notice my comment are small. I posted a link to my website under the post and went on with my day. A few hours later, I received a DM and was soon on the phone chatting with my new client! They told me that they reviewed every post and that after looking over my website they felt that I was the best person for the job. This was a great feeling!

How I Create “About Us” Videos for Businesses

I met with the client at his office just south of Detroit. My contact is the founder of a liquor promotion company. He explained that they have client relationships across the United States. Their problem is that most of their clients don’t realize how much that their company has to offer them.

We started with a detailed 5 page list of services. From there, I rewrote the high level details into a conversational script. Next, I created a storyboard to match the videos we would need to match the script. I worked with the client to set up shoots at 4 different locations, and coordinated with 20 of their female models to show everything that their company has to offer.

One of our locations was a bar setting, where we staged a few models serving free samples to patrons. After the shoot, we joined 2 of the models for some drinks. This is when I met the incredibly talented Hannah DeNike. She was in school, working 4 jobs and had ambitions of becoming a singer. I had already hired a professional voice actress to read the script, but I had a feeling that Hannah could do an even better job. And I was right.

Upon completing the video, the client loaded it onto hundreds of thumb drives and passed them out to his clients. This is my favorite part. A couple of weeks after finishing the video, the client calls me back to tell me about all of the great feedback he’s received. This is exactly why I love my job.

A few months later, we were rehired to record training videos to help onboard their new staff. We used Hannah again for the voice over and completed two 10 minute videos that the company still uses today.

Helping a New Brand - Football Training Equipment

One more example that I love to share is Josh Hopper, the inventor of the DNJ Assist. This device holds tackle packs in different positions depending of the drill. Historically, these tackle pads are held by the other players, and often lead to concussions during practice. The tackle stands not only reduce injury, but also make practices more efficient! Of course an awesome product like this needs a video.

One early morning, I showed up to their high school football practice. I was actually filming a wedding at noon that same day. I started the shoot by interviewing the coaches about the DNJ Assist practice stands. From their explanations, I had a better idea of what shots I would need to capture.

During the practice, I alternated between photos and videos so that Josh had plenty of media assets to start his new business. I flew my drone to get a vantage point of the football formation, which turned out really cool!

A few weeks later, Josh displayed the video in his booth at a football expo. He called me afterwards to tell me how many people stopped and commented on how much they liked it! There was keynote speaker who didn’t show up, so thanks to his popularity at the expo, they let Josh take his place to talk about his product in front of the entire event!

Josh continued to grow his brand, partnering with a football coach at Central Michigan University. At this point, Josh was ready to invest in his business. Hew hired us to create a video series to help other coaches learn the benefits of his tackle stand, and a create a full website to sell bundles of stands to schools and leagues.
