Producing TV Commercials
In 2017, I was asked for a 0:30 commercial from Lady Jane’s Haircuts for Men, which would be televised during the Detroit Lions football season. Once the contract was settled, we began recruiting 10 attractive male actors. Many were friends, some were professionals, but our best guy happened to be a dude I met playing volleyball.
Big Video Budgets
The client approved our equipment budget, allowing us to rent one of the best cameras in the industry,. No not a RED, we rented an Arri Alexa.
We began drafting a shot list and schedule to pack it all into 1 day. Managing dynamic camera movements on a large cinema camera not only requires expertise, but also more equipment and man power.
Our most complex scenes included:
#1: Coordinating 10 models and hair stylists while tracking with a dolly and controlling follow focus.
#2: Licensing sports footage and compositing it onto televisions behind celebrating men.
#3: Standing on a stool for an overheard punch in shot at a washing station while controlling follow focus.
$20,000 for 1 video is a small price in the scope of a television marketing campaign. For the same price, we were able to provide a eleven 1 minute videos with a similar level of production. In this series, we had a similar amount of prep work, more skilled actors, and different locations for every video. How could this project cost the same price?
Video Series’ Cost Less
Coming up with an initial concept can be a difficult, while repeating a video style becomes easier with time. My next client was an up and coming entertainment company looking to recruit local talent and kickstart an engaging social media channel. They came to me with a clear vision, making it easy to visualize and produce without any surprises.
“How Would You Handle It” is a video series about awkward situations, asking viewers to identify with 1 of 3 different responses.
Would you split the check on the first date?
Would you sacrifice your job for your family?
Entertainment Versus Education
Tiny House Tom hired me as a TikTok consultant in 2021, and now has over 150k followers. So when he decided to start his next business, naturally he called me.
Tom is offering a new service as a tiny house reseller. We scheduled a shoot during construction of a model house and came up with 50 videos perfect for populating his TikTok, Instagram and brand new YouTube Channel.
We also built Tom a website to sell his services and build SEO for his business with a consistent blog series.
Weekly Episodes
Hunter McIntyre has proven himself as the fittest man in the world, when it comes to the fastest growing hybrid fitness event called Hyrox.
Since hiring Digital Nomad, Hunter’s Instagram has jumped 50k followers and YouTube channel now making as much as $80 per day in monetization.
Posting 1-2 episodes and 2-3 live talk shows per week has been the perfect schedule for growing his channel.
Monetization aside, these channels have increased the athletes credibility, tripling his sponsorships and increasing the value of his sports nutrition brand from a start-up to nearly 8 figures in under 2 years.
Producing Videos for Billion Dollar Companies
Producing a video series for an 11 figure company like Mahle requires a different approach than a start-ups like Tiny House Tom or Hunter McIntyre. In this example, I was hired through a recruiting agency and put on payroll at a reasonable hourly rate. I was given clear instructions about the video style, including colors, fonts, graphics and music.
Mahle used this videos series to strengthen their relationship with their vendors. My contacts at Mahle were very happy with the results, and continued to hire me for a much larger project across the country.
